Trauma & PTSD

Trauma occurs when a frightening, dangerous, or overwhelming experience exceeds your ability to cope or process. It doesn’t have to be one dramatic event; trauma can be an accumulation of painful experiences over time. If you’ve experienced trauma you may notice:

  • Feeling worried, anxious, sad, or fearful

  • Having thoughts of or reliving the traumatic experience

  • Avoiding situations, people, or places that bring up distressing memories

  • Startling easily, being on edge

  • Feeling like something bad is going to happen

  • Changes in your sleep habits or having nightmares

  • Guilt, shame

  • Feeling numb, disconnected, or like you are watching your life from the outside

  • Somatic or physical symptoms: headaches, stomach aches, feeling shakiness or dizziness

Trauma becomes stored in the body. It causes your nervous system to become stuck in fight, flight, or freeze long after the experience has passed. You may know logically that you’re safe now, but your body hasn’t gotten the message yet.

In our work together, we’ll move at a pace that feels safe to you. We’ll build the tools and resources that you need, then work to reprocess what’s stuck, allowing your nervous system to settle.

Healing from trauma is possible. Reach out to get started.
